Woodstar Our story A house, run as a home

A house, not a hotel.

Woodstar is a newly built private beach compound on a single acre of Little Exuma, opened to guests in 2022. It is still privately owned by Rainer and Anna Burkhardt, run on the ground by two caretakers who treat it as their own — and named for the smallest, shyest bird in the islands.

— Beginnings The Burkhardts on Little Exuma

A family who wanted
a quiet place
on a quiet island.

Rainer and Anna Burkhardt are the proprietors of Woodstar Beach House. They built the compound on a single acre at the end of the road in Forbes Hill — a stretch of beach with a national park beginning at the waterline and the nearest neighbouring property a thousand feet away. They opened it to guests in 2022, and have hosted quietly ever since. Rainer is German, schooled in Stuttgart; Anna handles the home from the moment you write in.

— Behind the name
The loneliest bird going

Named for the smallest,
shyest bird in the islands.

A house on a quiet acreThe Bahamas are home to nearly four hundred species of bird, and only one of them is named the Woodstar.
The verandaLinen-cushioned modular sofas on one side, a long table for outdoor dining on the other — the part of the house everyone gravitates to.
"Natives call the Bahamas Woodstar a 'hummer,' because of the unmistakable sound of its wings while feeding. It is small even by hummingbird standards — three to four inches. Unlike most birds, the Woodstar is endemic to the Bahamas, meaning it does not migrate. Woodstars are antisocial, and come together only to mate. They are attracted to colourful flowers for their nectar, but go out of their way to avoid humans."

A few people,
not a hospitality company.

I
— Proprietors

Rainer & Anna Burkhardt.

The owners of Woodstar Beach House. Rainer is German, schooled in Stuttgart; Anna runs the correspondence and the trip planning. They are the ones who reply to your first letter — usually within the hour.

II
— On the ground

Shawn & D'Angelo.

Shawn Ewing is the house mother — shopping, cleaning, catering, and the answer to almost any question once you arrive. D'Angelo Hutchinson, her son-in-law, looks after the property itself, and is a skilled spear-fisher who will happily teach you to hunt lobster in the bay. Reachable at +1 (242) 558-8287.

"Shawn loves the vibe at Woodstar — she says it feels more personal than most rentals. She's right. There is no front desk, no concierge counter, no shift change. Two of us write back; two of you arrive. That is the entire arrangement."

— The philosophy A house, not a hotel

One family at a time,
one acre to themselves.

There is one set of guests in the house, the nearest neighbour a thousand feet away, and a small team paying attention to your stay. No front desk, no shift change, no upsell. Twenty guests have written reviews so far — the average is 4.9. We'd like to keep it small enough to keep it that way.
