A nimble centre console for the day's chosen line.

Minns Water Sports in George Town hires out motor boats by the day — command one yourself, or hire a captain who knows where the wind comes from and where the day-boat crowds aren't. Best for the swimming pigs run, the snorkel reefs, or a long lazy lunch at Chat 'n' Chill on Stocking Island.

A larger vessel with cabins, a salon, and a fighting chair. For deep-water fishing — wahoo, mahi, sailfish in season — or a longer cruise to the northern cays with a bed at the end of it. Stocked galley, captain and mate. Arranged on request from a small list of captains.

For the day you want the wind to do the work.

Twin hulls, a wide trampoline at the bow, a deep cockpit. A captain who knows where the wind comes from each afternoon. Sunset sails are the easiest sell — out at four, anchored off the Tropic of Cancer beach by half-past five, cocktails poured.

i.PigsBig Major CayNorth to the famous swimming pigs, then a long snorkel at Thunderball Grotto and a beach lunch at Compass Cay with the nurse sharks.
ii.TurtlesHoopers BayA short ride along the coast. Swim with wild sea turtles in calm water. Bring lettuce — they feed by hand.
iii.KitesMan-O-War CayLearn to kite surf in the Moriah Harbour Cay National Park, just around the corner. The winds always blow you back to the beach.
iv.StingraysOff Chat 'n' ChillThe waters off the most famous beach bar in the Bahamas are loaded with tame stingrays, begging for leftovers. Swim with them.
